Week Commencing 21st April 2008
Two more results needed to complete the season but the latest two results in saw
the away teams record 8 - 2
victories.
Billericay "A" entertained Buttsbury "A" at Ramsden Heath
and picked up two singles wins with both John Gagg and Peter Barrett defeating
Ev Lucas - John Holland and Glen Johnson were unbeaten and rarely troubled with
only the doubles going to a fifth and final end - again a loss to Billericay
10/12 in the last tie. Success for Buttsbury at 8
-
2.
BAE Selex "A" were another side finding points hard to come by - none
of the home side Trevor Collin, Dave Calleja or Keith Spicer could match George
Dianin who was undefeated - Neal Barker found Calleja a difficult opponent and
just managed to overcome the home player in five ends 7/11, 11/5, 11/5 6/11,
11/7 - Jackman also had a struggle to get the better of Collin and took the
first end 18/16 in a long match. Spicer showed his colleagues
how it was done by defeating both Barker in four and Jackman in three and a last
ditch fourth end in the doubles that took Herongate home was scored at
22/20. Victory for Herongate at 8 -2.
Week Commencing 21st April 2008 Two more recent Herongate matches reported on - against Billericay "A" they could only field two players in the unbeaten Graham Arthurton and Peter Davis and yet managed a creditable 5 - 5 draw against John Gagg, John Parodi and Dave Carter - the only successes for Billericay came in a five end win for Gagg over Davis 6/11, 12/10, 11/5, 8/11, 11/5 and a doubles win for Gagg & Parodi in four. Herongate followed up with another 5 - 5 draw in an away match at Brentwood "A", their star performer on this occasion was George Dianin who picked up three wins with Peter Rushbrook collecting one win - a five end victory over Brian Steward (P/Up) 11/8, 6/11, 4/11, 11/7, 12/10 - Peter Davis was their third player but unfortunately had to retire in his first singles having taken the first two ends from Steward and took no further part in the match - Rushbrook and Dianin took the doubles for their fifth point against Trevor Carter and Philip Purser who both recorded two points for the home side. Week Commencing 14th April 2008 Herongate caught up on two of their outstanding matches - at home to Buttsbury "A" they were convincingly defeated by their visitors with only a win for Graham Arthurton over Ev Lucas to show for their efforts - John Holland and Glen Johnson were in excellent form and collected three wins each - with Lucas picking up two - Peter Rushbrook and Neal Barker were the unfortunate players for Herongate to miss out. Herongate followed this defeat up with a 7 - 3 away win at Billericay "C" - Paul Mulley, Mark Martin and Terry Timms were unable to contain their visitors Peter Davis, Graham Arthurton and Neal Barker with Arthurton picking up three wins (all in four) and Davis and Barker two each - both going down to Timms - his win over Davis coming in five having lost the first two ends 7/11, 8/11, 11/5, 11/9, 11/4 - the doubles win in five captured the third point for Billericay. Billericay Sports "B" were no match for visitors Mountnessing "A" who pulled off an 8 - 2 away win with Hamish Innes collecting his now usual maximum and being supported by Dave Finlayson who lost to Andrew Murray in four and Gordon Gatheral who lost to Bruce Kettle in four - surprisingly none of the games went to five with only two being completed in three. A two player team of BAE Selex "A" consisting of Gary Ward and Nigel Lamb gave visitors Billericay Sports "A" the opportunity to record their third win of the season - Keith Ashton and Marylyn Bawden gained wins over Nigel Lamb while Ray Eldridge came unstuck in five against him - losing 13/11, 11/5, 8/11, 9/11, 8/11 but Ward was in superior form and picked up three wins but the three points conceded was enough to give Sports "A" victory 6 - 4. Champions Hutton "A" were at home against Brentwood "A" and were worthy 9 - 1 winners against Nikki Kennard, Trevor Carter and Phil Purser - Kevin Read and Django Fung were rarely troubled and remained unbeaten but Keith Phillips found Purser a shade more difficult than his other two opponents and lost in five to the visitor 6/11, 11/7, 6/11, 11/5, 5/11. Week Commencing 7th April 2008 Steve Muth moved into joint fourth in the averages with 77% when Billericay "B" defeated their club colleagues Billericay "C" by 7 games to 3 - unbeaten but had his toughest game of the evening in his tussle with Terry Timms who took the first two ends, narrowly lost the third at deuce and then allowed Muth in to win 8/11, 4/11, 12/10, 11/4, 11/6. Timms won twice for the "C" team and his encounter with John Webber was somewhat strange as Webber lost the first two ends 1/11, 1/11 then won the next two11/8, 15/13 but failed in the fifth 9/11. Webber claimed two wins - over Paul Mulley in five and Mark Martin (failed to score) in four while Mulley gained a point for the visitors by defeating Guy McKenzie in five. McKenzie's only point coming in his defeat of Martin. Brentwood "A" were defeated 4 - 6 at home to BAE Selex "A" who had Keith Spicer to thank for three of their wins including an excellent four end win over Paul Cuming - who defeated both Gary Ward and Kevin Smart for his two Brentwood points - Nikki Kennard and Philip Purser both inflicted defeats on Smart to record their only victories and a five end win in the doubles for the visitors Ward/Spicer gave them their extra point and victory. Week Commencing 31st March 2008 With one more fixture in their calendar Hutton "A" have already assured themselves of the title of League Champions by winning their two recent matches, against Buttsbury "A" at Hullbridge Community Centre on Good Friday and against Mountessing "A" at St. Johns Church Hall on Tuesday 25th March - the title has been won by Buttsbury for the past eight seasons but for Hutton "A" it is their first success since they last won the title in season 1973/1974 - the days when Danny Dempsey and John Darling were prominent members of the team - a year incidentally that Dempsey was crowned Brentwood League Individual Champion. A full report on both matches follows. Hutton "A" inflicted a second defeat of the season on Buttsbury "A" at the Hullbridge and in doing so took a huge step towards taking the League title away from the team who have been champions for the past eight years. The main player for Hutton was Kevin Read who won all three of his games, conceding one end in the process to Ev Lucas - his other victories over John Holland and Glen Johnson were both taken in three ends. Django Fung and Keith Phillips both collected two wins with wins over Johnson and Lucas but both giving best to Holland who won twice - Read/Phillips then took the doubles over Holland/Lucas to secure the eighth point. The following week Hutton "A" became League champions, certainly for the first time in 32 years with another victory - this time over at Mountnessing "A" to the score of 7 - 3 - Kevin Read once again led the way with yet another maximum all taken in three ends - Keith Phillips supported with two wins and Ken James collected one win. Mountnessing's best player being Hamish Innes who in his first season is currently third in the averages - in this match Innes defeated both James and Phillips for two points, Mark Allaway collected one win over James but Dave Finlayson found the going somewhat more difficult and was unable to score final score 7 - 3 to Hutton "A". Billericay Sports "B" travelled to Buttsbury "A" and found John Holland, Glen Johnson and Ev Lucas in top form with the home side running out 9 - 1 winners - Debbie Auvache claimed the solitary point for the Sports team with a win over Lucas in four - losing the first 1/11 but then finding her touch to win the remaining three ends 11/9, 11/6, 11/7. Brian Cole and Andrew Murray were Sports other two players. Trevor Colin (1 win), Gary Ward (2 wins) and Keith Spicer (2 wins) entertained Mountnessing "A" and were winners 6 - 4 against Hamish Innes (unbeaten), Dave Finlayson (1 win) and Peter Hardiman - The best game of the match came with Ward up against Innes with the first two ends going to Ward but Innes fought back to level and take the encounter to a fifth end which saw Innes triumph 9/11, 6/11, 11/8, 11/7, 12/10. The first singles of the evening saw Collin claw his way back from losing the first two ends to Finlayson in a low scoring battle 3/11, 3/11, 11/6, 11/2, 3/11 but losing in the final end - Finlayson losing to Spicer and Ward. Billericay Sports "A" and Billericay "A" battled it out to a 5 - 5 draw with the visitors providing the unbeaten player of the match in Peter Brownlow - John Parodi picked up one win in defeating Marylyn Bawden but had to overcome losing the first two ends to take the next three - Dave Carter was the visitors third player and was sorely out of touch although in the last singles of the match he did at least take Ray Eldridge to five ends. Eldridge and Keith Ashton defeated Parodi and Carter and with Bawden also defeating Carter the doubles victory for the visitors ensured the spoils were shared. Week Commencing 24th March 2008 Billericay "B" gained a 6 - 4 home win over Billericay Sports "A" and took the match thanks to a win in the doubles for John Webber and Neil Freeman over Ray Eldridge and Keith Ashton- in the singles four players were unable to gain maximums as Eldridge prevented Steve Muth from gaining his treble with a five end victory for the visitor 14/12, 7/11, 5/11, 13/11, 11/7, Eldridge himself was denied by Freeman in five who in turn lost to Ashton in four and he likewise lost to Muth - John Webber was the home teams third player and settled for his point with a win over Sport's third player Brian Cole who was pointless. A similar situation developed in the second match at Ramsden Heath when Billericay "A" played Brentwood "A" - again four players all recording two wins - John Gagg (2 wins) lost his attempt at a maximum when he lost to Trevor Carter (2 wins) in the final singles - Peter Barratt (2 wins) was denied his treble by Philip Purser (2 wins) who recorded a superb win in five 15/13, 4/11, 5/11, 11/8, 11/6 - John Parodi had to settle for a five end win over Bob Garson who was unable to score in the match - the doubles was also the deciding factor in this match as the home pairing of Gagg/Parodi defeated Carter/Purser in four. Week Commencing 10th March 2008 Once again it is Hutton "A" who lead the way in the reports section having demolished Billericay Sports "B" to the tune of 9 - 1 in their latest match. Dave Kirston was the visitors only point scorer witha superb four end win over Keith Phillips 11/6, 11/9, 6/11, 11/4 - Kirston also forced Peter Saunders into a five end battle before losing out 8/11 in the fifth end. Pat White took both Saunders and Phillips to fpour ends - winning the first end in each but White was unable to force home his advantage. Sports thirs player Andrew Murray was completely dominated by the three Hutton players with Django Fung taking all three of his games in three ends. Hutton's closest rivals Buttsbury "A" could only field two players and paid the price by dropping vital points against BAE Selex "A" in a 5 - 5 draw. Buttsbury called on Reagan Nettleingham to "play up" from the first division and he duly obliged by winning all three against Gary Ward, Keith Spicer and Dave Calleja - Ev Lucas gained one win and then along with Nettleingham took the doubles. While not totally out of the chase for the title, dropping points at this stage of the season could see their efforts end in finishing runners-up. Brentwood "A" collected a 6 - 4 home win over Billericay "B" but had the pleasure of seeing Paul Cuming maintain his excellent form by remaining unbeaten and rarely troubled, Trevor Carter collected two wins - giving best to John Webber in a five end struggle 12/10, 5/11, 7/11, 11/5, 9/11 but defeating both Neil Freeman and Guy McKenzie - Brentwood's third player Philip Purser narrowly lost to Webber in five and to Freeman in four but picked up a useful win over McKenzie to ensure victory for Brentwood. Billericay "C" were 8 - 2 home winners over Billericay Sports "B" and provided two unbeaten players in Terry Timms and Mark Martin - neither of them being troubled by Brian Cole, Pat White and Andrew Murray - the two points for Sports "B" came with wins over Paul Mulley for Cole and White, Murray failing to score. Hutton "A" also gained a more than useful 7 - 3 away win at Herongate and had Kevin Read to thank for three of their points - forced to four ends by both Peter Rushbrook and Neal Barker (2 wins) but Read surprisingly getting an easy win over the stylish Peter Davis - Davis collecting one point with an excellent win over Django Fung in a five end battle 13/15, 11/6, 8/11, 11/8, 11/8 - Herongate's other two points came via Barker over Phillips in five and Fung in five 8/11, 11/8, 11.8, 14/16, 12/10. Mountnessing "A" with Hamish Innes, Mark Allaway and Dave Finlayson were up against a Billericay "A" team of Peter Brownlow, Steve Northcott and John Parodi and were outgunned 4 - 6 by the visitors - Innes (2 wins) lost to Northcott in four, Allaway (1 win) defeated Northcott in four and dropped a two end lead against Parodi while Finlayson was unable to score - so Brownlow and Parodi defeated Finlayson and Allaway with Northcott defeating Innes and Finlayson - Finlayson having long drawn out struggles with both Northcott and Parodi and was perhaps somewhat unfortunate to lose both matches at 10/12 in the fifth end. Week Commencing 3rd March 2008 Hutton "A" enjoyed a 9 - 1 away win at Billericay "C" and had Django Fung and Ken James collecting trebles and Keith Phillips picking up two wins - his only loss coming at the hands of Terry Timms in five ends. Fung needed five ends to defeat Mark Martin and James also needed a fifth end to dispose of Paul Mulley - the win maintains Hutton's lead at the top of the table. Billericay Sports "B" still cannot find a winning formula - their match at home to BAE Selex "A" resulted in a 7 - 3 win for the visitors who had both Keith Spicer and Dave Calleja collecting maximums - Spicer and Calleja needing five ends to defeat Pat White and Debbie Auvache who collected a point each with victory over Nigel Lamb - Brian Cole was Sport's third player and along with Auvache won their third point with a win in the doubles. Hamish Innes was in his usual defiant mood when Mountnessing "A" travelled to Billericay "B" - he was unbeaten in a 6 - 4 away win and was well supported by Dave Finlayson who won twice - Innes and Finlayson combining to take the doubles for the visitors and the sixth point. The three home players Guy McKenzie, Neil Freeman and John Webber all defeated Gordon Gatheral while Webber also got the better of Finlayson for his second win. Billericay Sports "A" of Keith Ashton, Ray Eldridge and Marylyn Bawden did their utmost to defeat Billericay "C" but just failed in the run in - two wins for Eldridge came over Mark Mulley and Mark Martin with Bawden getting the better of Terry Timms and Martin - Ashton failed to score and with the doubles going to the visitors - Sports lost the match by a narrow margin. Week Commencing 25th February 2008 Herongate conceded three points to Billericay "A" due to the absence of a third player yet still managed to collect a useful 5 - 5 draw - with Graham Arthurton unbeaten and showing excellent ability by winning his three sing;les all in three ends - he was supported by Peter Davis who collected the other two points, Herongate would probably have expected to win the match with a full team. For the visitors John Gagg picked up the only singles point with a superb five end win over the hard hitting and stylish Peter Davis 6/11, 12/10, 11/5, 8/11, 11/5 and then joined up with John Parodi to pick up the doubles in four ends. Dave Carter was the visitors third player. Hutton "A" maintained their unbeaten record with a 7 - 3 away win at BAE Selex "A" - Gary Ward was in excellent form for the home side and was unbeaten - just getting the better of Keith Phillips in the final singles 11/7, 4/11, 4/11, 12/10, 11/4 the only encounter which went to a fifth end - unfortunately for BAE they were unable to gain any more points from the match as both Dave Calleja and Kevin Smart were pointless - both being beaten by Hutton's other two players Ken James and Peter Saunders. Two matches for Brentwood "A" to report on - against Buttsbury "A" they were only able to field two players in Paul Cuming and Trevor Carter but still managed to take three points from the high flying John Holland (unbeaten in two), Ray Murray and Ev Lucas who both collected one win each and both losing to the impressive Paul Cuming - Carter came close to earning his Brentwood side another point just losing out to Lucas in the fifth having to come back from losing the first two ends 14/16, 1/11, 11/9, 13/11, 8/11 - final score 7 - 3 win for Buttsbury "A" which keeps them in contention for the title. Brentwood's next match was a home fixture against Billericay Sports "A" who had to call on Alf Fox to play up along with regulars Keith Ashton and Marylyn Bawden - final score 7 - 3 to the home team with Paul Cuming once again in commanding form barely breaking sweat to take his three singles all in three early ends - Trevor Carter won twice - losing in the first singles having started slowly by dropping the first two ends but Carter forced the encounter into a fifth end before Bawden got over the line 11/7, 11/8, 11/13, 12/14, 11/7. A similar situation faced Carter in his game with Ashton - losing the first two ends he came back strongly to reverse the decision and managed to pick up vitory over Ashton 11/13, 7/11, 11/9, 11/9, 11/9. Philip Purser was the home team's third player and having won the first two ends he also found himself facing a fifth end with a spirited comeback from Fox - but a cruel net at 9/10 in the fifth gave victory to Purser. Buttsbury "A" posted another 7 - 3 home win - this one against Billericay "B". John Holland again gave a match winning performance with three wins but was pushed to a fifth end by Steve Muth who at one stage held a 2 -1 lead and then lost the fourth end at deuce- Holland taking the fifth. Muth went on to win both of his other two singles - against Ray Murray and Ev Lucas who themselves were too strong for Neil Freeman and Guy McKenzie - the doubles went to Freeman/McKenzie over Murray/Lucas in five to give Billericay "B" their third point. Week Commencing 18th February 2008 Terry Timms was the lone point scorer in a Billericay "C" home match against BAE Selex "A" with the 7 - 3 result going to the visitors. The ever steady Timms lost only one end all evening in games against Kevin Smart, Nigel Lamb and Trevor Collin - Paul Mulley and Keith Cullen failed to score although Mulley did take ends from all three of his opponents. Another maximum player was Steve Muth in his Bilericay "B" teams 7 - 3 win over Herongate - Muth was taken the distance by Richard Jackman and needed to overcome a 2 - 1 deficit in ends before crossing the finishing line 11/4, 9/11, 7/11, 11/8, 11/7 - Neil Freeman collected two wins - over Neal Barker in four (last two ends from deuce) and a another four end end battle with Jackman - Freeman being denied his maximum by Peter Rushbrook in the last singles of the evening in five ends. John Webber was the home team's third player and defeated Rushbrook in three for his single point. Hutton "A" continued their winning ways with an 8 - 2 home win over a strong Billericay "A" side of Peter Barrett, Peter Brownlow and John Gagg - a full strength Hutton team including Kevin Read (unbeaten), Django Fung with two wins - (beaten in five by Barrett) and Keith Phillips with two wins (beaten in five by Gagg) also took the doubles for a victory which strengthens their hold on the top of the table. Billericay Sports "B" entertained Billericay "B" and fell behind in the earlier singles but bounced back to lead 5 - 4 going into the doubles. Unfortunately for Pat White and Brian Cole they were unable to contain Neil Freeman and Guy McKenzie and the match finished at 5 - 5. For the home side Pat White showed a glimpse of his ability with two wins over Freeman and McKenzie and a five end final singles defeat at the hands of John Webber 7/11, 6/11, 11/5, 13/11, 10/12 - Debbie Auvache also won twice but her defeat came at the hands of McKenzie - the third Sport's player Brian Cole losing to Webber in five and Freeman in four but defeating McKenzie in three. Billericay Sports "A" and Mountnessing "A" battled it out for a 5 - 5 draw at Crays Hill with none of the home players able to contain Hamish Innes who remained unbeaten - Keith Ashton (1 win) coming close to victory just losing out in a five end encounter. Marylyn Bawden (1 win) and Ray Eldridge (2 wins) were other victims of Innes - all three of the home players were able to get the better of Mark Allaway (Bawden getting home in five) but Dave Finlayson collected two vital wins over Ashton and Bawden to deny the home side victory. Billericay "A" and Billericay Sports "B" also fought out a 5 - 5 draw with Andrew Murray for the visitors defeating John Gagg, John Parodi and Dave Carter for an excellent maximum - Pat White collected two wins - over Gagg and Parodi with Dave Kirston unable to score. The home side's third player Dave Carter collected two wins both in five ends over White and Kirston. Week Commencing 11th February 2008 Mountnessing "A" and Brentwood "A" played out a 5 - 5 draw with the away side providing the unbeaten performer on the night. Hamish Innes, Dave Finlayson and Mark Allaway needed a doubles win to secure their fifth point having seen Paul Cuming, Trevor Carter and Philip Purser collect five singles victories. Cuming was instrumental for Brentwood with an unbeaten performance which included a five end win over Innes - with the home player taking the first two ends only to see the next three taken by Cuming 9/11, 6/11, 12/10, 11/8, 11/8 Finlayson gained a four end win over Carter while Allaway collected a five end win over Purser - he also recovering from a two end deficit 9/11, 8/11, 16/14, 11/7, 11/9. Buttsbury "A" with the assistance of Reagan Nettleingham appear to have decided to make a late rally to hold on to their champions title. Their victory over Billericay Sports "A" was a welcome 9 - 1 which takes them closer to Hutton at the top. Nettleingham and John Holland were unbeaten with Ev Lucas going down to Ray Eldridge for the Sport's solitary point - Keith Ashton and Marylyn Bawden being denied any points by their opponents. Week Commencing 4th February 2008 Billericay Sports "A" entertained the Herongate trio who make the long journey from Kent and although the home side of Ray Eldridge, Keith Ashton and Marylyn Bawden ran out 6 - 4winners they were unable to overcome the tenacious and hard hitting Peter Davis who collected an excellent maximum. Davis did not have things all his own way however being forced to a fifth end by Ashton and in the final singles another five end tie against Eldridge which went to deuce before Davis got over the finishing line with scores 11/9, 4/11, 9/11, 11/3, 13/11. Ashton picked up two wins over Peter Rushbrook and Wayne Holder with Bawden defeating Rushbrook for her singles victory - Holder just getting the better of Bawden in five and losing to Eldridge also in five. Dave Carter (2 wins), John Gagg (2 wins) and John Parodi (1 win) of Billericay "A" were all unable to overcome the consistency of Billericay "C"s Terry Timms who turned in an excellent maximum - winning in five against Gagg and four against his other two opponents. Paul Mulley collected one win with a victory over Parodi and just failed to edge out Gagg in the fifth end of their encounter 10/12 with the "C" teams third player Mark Martin pointless. The following week Mountnessing "A" were the home side and played hosts to the Billericay "C" side that comprised the Paul Mulley family of Mark and Matt - the home side were in good form and were 7 - 3 winners with both Dave Finlayson and Hamish Innes unbeaten and combining to take the doubles. Mark Allaway was Mountnessing's third player and fell to all three of the Mulley family - losing to Paul and Matt in five and to Mark in four. Billericay "A" were 6 - 4home winners over BAE Selex "A" but none of the six players on view were able to collect an unbeaten three wins. In a match that saw four games to five ends and six to four ends it was probably past midnight before they all left the hall. Trevor Collin defeated John Gagg in four followed by Dave Calleja beating John Parodi in four - Dave Carter then recorded a superb five end win over Keith Spicer which was followed up by Parodi defeating Collin in four - Spicer with a win over Gagg in five put the visitors in front but Carter over Calleja in five and Parodi in four over Spicer followed by a fourth point for the visitors when Carter dropped a two end lead against Collin before going down 12/14 in the fifth to bring the scores level but Gagg over Calleja in five 17/15 in the final end and a four end win in the doubles gave the home side a slender 6 - 4 win. Another team from Ramsden Heath - Billericay "B" almost forced a draw with leading club Hutton "A" who took the doubles courtesy of a Django Fung/Keith Phillips five end win over John Webber and Steve Muth to give the leaders a 6 - 4 away win. Muth was Billericay's best player on the night with two wins losing to Phillips in five but defeating Fung also in five - Peter Saunders was Hutton's third player and was point;less losing to Neil Freeman in five and to his other two opponents. A week earlier BAE Selex "A" had carved out a 6 - 4 home win over Billericay "B" thanks to a maximum from Keith Spicer who claimed three wins in quick fashion over Neil Freeman, (2 wins), John Webber (1 win) and Guy McKenzie - Dave Calleja with two wins and Trevor Collin one win gave Spicer excellent support - Freeman defeated both Calleja and Collin for his two points while Webber also got the better of Collin. Week Commencing 28th January 2008 Herongate pulled themselves well clear of the bottom of the table with a 10 - 0 home win against two players from Brentwood "A" - George Dianin, Richard Jackman and Neal Barker were always in command although Nikki Kennard made both Dianin and Barker work hard for their victories - losing against Barker 11/5, 10/12, 11/8, 6/11, 10/12 and against Dianin 11/6, 8/11, 8/11, 11/7, 5/11 - Philip Purser was Brentwood's second player, had some close games but failed like Kennard to score any points. Second placed Buttsbury "A" do not appear to have given up just yet on their title hopes as they ran out 8 - 2 winners over Mountnessing "A" - John Holland was in his usual winning vein and defeated Dave Finlayson, Gordon Gatheral and Mark Allaway comfortably - George Pavitt also had three end wins over Finlayson and Allaway but just sqeezed home against the difficult Gatheral in five ends 11/6, 12/14, 11/8, 8/11, 11/9. Ev Lucas supported with one win, a four end point against Allaway. The doubles went to Buttsbury in four. Billericay Sports "B" as the home team against their club rivals Sports "A" could only collect two points in an 8 - 2 defeat which saw both Brian Cole and Dave Kirston defeat Bruce Kettle - Kirston coming from two ends down to win in five 8/11, 9/11, 11/5, 11/9, 11/5 - the "A" team without a number of regular players called on Alf Fox to play up and he responded by taking all three of his games - against Kirston and Cole in four and Pat White in three. Keith Ashton was their third player and he also collected a timely maximum although having to fight extremely hard against White in the first singles of the night before crossing the finishing line 7/11, 11/4, 6/11, 11/8, 11/9. The doubles went to Ashton/Kettle against Kirston/White for an "A" team win./ Week Commencing 21st January 2008 Brentwood "A" gained their fifth win of the season with a 9 - 1 win over bottom club Billericay Sports "B". Paul Cuming, Trevor Carter and Philip Purser were too hot for visitors Brian Cole, Dave Kirston and Pat White - White being responsible for the Sports "B" point with a win over Purser 11/8, 12/10, 14/12. Last years champions are not ready yet to be written off and are 18 points behind the leaders with a game in hand - their latest match saw them defeat a two player team of Billericay "C" at Ramsden Heath 8 - 2 - John Holland was in his usual commanding form, unbeaten but still needing five ends to defeat Terry Timms - George Pavitt and Ev Lucas both lost in five to the redoubtable Timms - Pavitt losing 12/10, 9/11, 11/9, 11/13, 6/11 and Lucas 12/10, 9/11, 13/11, 3/11, 5/11. Paul Mulley was Billericay's other player but was unable to collect any points. Herongate moved themselves further up the table with a 7 - 3 away win at Mountnessing "A" - the home side of Hamish Innes (2 wins), Dave Finlayson (1 win) and Mark Allaway came up against an inspired Richard Jackman who was unbeaten for Herongate, not without a strong challenge however from Innes who won the first two ends before losing 11/4, 11/9, 6/11, 5/11, 5/11 and Finlayson who held a 2 -1 advantage before going down 9/11, 12/10, 11/9, 5/11, 5/11. Graham Arthurton with two wins and a five end loss to Innes added two points to the total and George Dianin collected one win over Allaway. Week Commencing 14th January 2008 Top team Hutton "A" kept up their unbeaten sequence of 11 matches by defeating Billericay Sports "A" at Crays Hill 7 - 3. Both Keith Phillips and Django Fung were undefeated although Phillips was taken to five ends by both Marylyn Bawden and Keith Ashton with Bawden also taking Fung to five ends - the loser on the night for Hutton was Ken James who fell to all three of his opponents with Ray Eldridge the home team's third player. George Reeves was instrumental in Billericay "B" recording a 7 - 3 victory over Billericay "A" - Reeves gained a quick fire treble over Peter Brownlow, John Gagg and Steve Northcott all in three ends with John Webber also picking up wins over Gagg (1 win) and Northcott but losing to Brownlow (2 wins) - Webber's wins both coming in five ends - the "C" team's third player Steve Muth gained one win over Northcott who failed to score. but in partnership with Reeves collected the seventh point by taking the doubles over Northcott and Brownlow. Week Commencing 10th December 2007 Brentwood "A" rose to the occasion when entertaining League leaders Hutton "A" at Tipps Cross and held their visitors to a 5 - 5 draw. Paul Cuming was their inspiration with a superb treble - defeating Keith Phillips in the first singles 10/12, 12/10, 9/11, 11/9, 11/9 in a game which must have been extremely entertaining to watch - Cuming followed up with a four end win over Django Fung and then four ends again in the last singles against Peter Saunders. Interspesed in these games were two wins for Nikke Kennard - a hard fought five end game with Saunders and an easy victory over Phillips 11/3, 11/9, 11/4 - she was denied her hat trick by Fung who won in three - Philip Purser had a night to forget losing to all three of the visitors despite some close games. Still without a win to their name Billericay Sports "B" could collect only one point in a 9 - 1 defeat at the hands of Buttsbury "A" - the away side of John Holland, George Pavitt and Ev Lucas were generally in total command and took all of the singles points on offer with Andrew Murray putting up most resistance - losing to Holland in five 11/9, 5/11, 9/11, 11/5, 4/11 and to Pavitt in four but falling easily to Lucas. Brian Cole and Pat White battled bravely but just denied Buttsbury a clean sweep with a White/Murray victory over Pavitt/Lucas in the doubles. Week Commencing 3rd December 2007 A very competitive match between Herongate and Billericay "C" ended with both teams probably satisfied with a 5 - 5 draw. The home team of Neal Barker (2 wins), Peter Davis (unbeaten) and Wayne Holder enjoyed lots of high scoring ends with Terry Timms picking up two wins, Mark Martin and Matt one win each with a Martin/Timms combination taking the doubles. BAE Selex "A" gained eight points in a fixture against Brentwood "A" mainly due to the visitors only able to field two players in Trevor Carter and Philip Purser - Carter picking up his sides two points with excellent wins over Keith Spicer in three and Gary Ward in four but Dave Calleja lowered Carter's hopes of a maximum by coming from two ends down to take the tie in five ends 8/11, 7/11, 16/14, 11/6, 11/7 - Purser being unable to score. Hutton "A" maintain their headlong rush to the title and thrashed a more than useful Mountnessing "A" side 9 - 1 - Kevin Read and Keith Phillips were both unbeaten with the only "blemish" being a defeat for Djamgo Fung by Hamish Innes - Innes getting mighty close to Read before going down in five - Gordon Gatheral had a five end struggle against Fung which went to the Hutton player 11/7, 11/13, 11/9, 8/11, 11/9 - Dave Finlayson played his part but could not muster any wins. Mountnessing "A" made up for the disappointment of their heavy loss at Hutton by handing out their own brand of medicine to Billericay Sports "B" - Mark Allaway, Hamish Innes and Dave Finlayson collected a handsome 10 - 0 win over Brian Cole, Dave Kirston and Andrew Murray - Kirston just unable to hang on in the fifth end against both Innes and Finlayson. Buttsbury "A" will no doubt keep up the chase but their latest fixture at home to Herongate saw them hanging on for a 5 - 5 draw - John Holland was masterly and unbeaten with both George Pavitt and Ev Lucas picking up a win each against the unfortunate Peter Rushbrook - Richard Jackman and Graham Arthurton collected two wins apiece and then combined to take the doubles. A satisfactory 7 - 3 home win for Billericay "C" was marred by Billericay "B" only able to field two players - the star of the evening being Steve Muth who claimed his side's three points in an unbeaten performance not without some difficulty - four ends against Paul Mulley and Mark Martin and five ends against Terry Timms - Guy McKenzie failing to score for the "B" team. Another unbeaten performance came from Billericay Sports "A" Keith Shepherd in a 5 - 5 draw against BAE Selex "A" Shepherd was really only put under pressure by Gary Ward who lost in five to the home player - Ward winning his other two over Marylyn Bawden in four and in five against Keith Ashton who had a night to remember - taking all three of his opponents to a fifth end and being on the losing end each time - against Trevor Collin and Gary Ward 11/9 in the fifth and 11/5 against Calleja, Ashton did indeed hold 2 - 0 advantage against Collin and 2 - 1 advantage against Calleja. Week Commencing 26th November 2007 Herongate picked up a four points in a 6 - 4 home defeat against BAE Selex "A" side who could only field two players - the home team of Graham Arthurton, Peter Davis and Wayne Holder could only collect one singles win - Davis over Gary Ward (2 wins) with the other visitor Nigel Lamb coming to the fore with three excellent wins - Ward and Lamb took the doubles to collect BAE Selex's sixth point. Billericay Sports "A" travelled the short distance to Ramsden Heath to meet Billericay "A" and were looking for their first win of the season. Flu victim Dave Carter was banished from the hall by his colleagues eager no doubt to avoid the same fate that has befallen Dave - frantic phone calls brought a response from "substitute" Peter Barratt and he duly obliged with a maximum over Keith Ashton, Ray Eldridge and Marylyn Bawden and with John Gagg defeating Bawden and the home team gaining a fifth point with a doubles win a 5 - 5 draw proved to be the final outcome - John Parodi was the home side's third player. Billericay Sports "B" poor run of form continued - in their latest match at home to Buttsbury "A" they could only collect one point with a win in the doubles - the home side of Brian Cole, Pat White and Andrew Murray were outgunned by John Holland, Ev Lucas and George Pavitt and were defeated 1 - 9 by the visitors. Week Commencing 19th November 2007 League Champions Buttsbury "A" faced Hutton "A" at home and with the unbeaten Hutton team looking most likely to be their nearest challengers - final result in an excellent match was 5 - 5 draw which saw Hutton's lose their 100% record. First match saw John Holland easily overcome Django Fung in four but the visitors then went 3 - 1 ahead with wins for Keith Phillips and Fung over George Pavitt and Kevin Read defeating Glen Johnson in five 6/11, 11/8, 11/3, 10/12, 11/6 but Holland over Read in four and Johnson over Phillips in three pulled the match all square - game seven went to Read over Pavitt in an encounter no one seemed to have to desire to win 4/11, 11/4, 3/11, 11/4, 11/2 - Buttsbury took the next two courtesy of Johnson over Fung with a thrilling five end win for Holland over Phillips 9/11, 11/7, 11/4, 4/11, 11/8 which set the match up for a doubles finale won by Hutton 13/11 in the fifth end. Mountnessing "A" entertained BAE Selex "A" and claimed a 5 - 5 draw with thanks to an unbeaten performance from Hamish Innes, Dave Finlayson (1 win) gave his usual 100% commitment losing to both Kevin Smart (2 wins) and Keith Spicer (2 wins) both 9/11 in the fifth end but got the better of the third BAE member Dave Calleja also in five. Gordon Gatheral was unable to collect any points so it was left to Innes and Finlayson to take the doubles over Calleja and Spicer. A week later Mountnessing "A" were losers 3 - 7 against the home team of Billericay "A" - Dave Carter was in impressive form on the night and remained unbeaten - his best win coming over Hamish Innes in four, Carter also beating Dave Finlayson in four and Gordon Gatheral in five and coming from two ends down to win his game with Gatheral John Gagg won twice with wins over both Finlayson and Gatheral, Billericay's third player John Parodi picked up one point. A gritty display from Dave Carter a week earlier had seen him a little unfortunate not to have won all three in a Billericay "A" match away at Brentwood "A". The home side of Trevor Carter (2 wins), Paul Cuming (2 wins) and Nikki Kennard (1 win) needed a doubles win in five to record a 6 - 4 home win with Dave Carter defeating namesake Trevor 12/10, 12/10, 15/13 and Kennard 11/6, 11/3, 6/11, 11/6 and holding a 2 - lead over Cuming before losing 8/11 in the final end - John Parodi collected a three end win over Cuming and John Gagg won against Kennard in four. All in all two excellent matches for Dave Carter. Herongate defeated bottom club Billericay Sports "B" thanks to seven points from Graham Arthurton and Richard Jackman who also took the doubles - Herongate's third player Richard Jackman played his part and put up a terrific performance in all three of his singles- losing in five to Dave Kirston, in five to Andrew Murray and in five to Brian Cole - against Kirston and Cole Rushbrook held a 2 - 1 advantage before losing games four and five - final score 7 - 3to Herongate. George Reeves made a rare appearance for Billericay "B" in their away match with Billericay Sports "A" - Reeves was unbeaten and rarely extended in competition against Keith Ashton, Ray Eldridge and Marilyn Bawden - he received excellent support from Neil Freeman who defeated both Bawden (12/10 in the fifth) and Eldridge (11/9 in the fifth) - but Ashton prevented a maximum by overcoming Freeman in four ends. All three of the home players defeated Billericay's third player Guy McKenzie but not without some difficulty for the home players - against Ashton and Bawden both went to a final fifth end for a 6 - 4 win for Billericay "B". Week Commencing 12th November 2007 Still enjoying their reign at the top of the table are Hutton "A" who entertained Herongate on the 9th November and gained a 6 - 4 victory (just) thanks to a last minute doubles win for Kevin Read and Keith Phillips over Peter Davis and Richard Jackman 11/6, 6/11, 11/8, 16/14. The singles total was 5 - 4 in favour of Hutton with Read completing an excellent maximum despite being taken to four ends by both Davis and Jackman - Phillips won twice - a five end tie over Davis 11/3, 9/11, 7/11, 11/5, 11/6 and a three end win over Neal Barker - Jackman standing in the way of a maximum for Phillips by defeating him 13/15, 11/4, 11/3, 11/0. Peter Saunders was Hutton's third player unable to claim any points in losing to Jackman and Davis in four and Barker in five. Week Commencing 5th November 2007 Hutton "A" followed up their recent exploits by recording their sixth win in succession - playing at home in Hutton Parish Hall their team of Peter Saunders (3 wins), Keith Phillips (2 wins) and Ken James (1 win) gained a 7 - 3 home win over the Billericay "C" team of Dad Paul Mulley (1 win) and sons Mark (2 wins) and Mathew. Paul got the visitors off to a bright start by defeating James in five, Mark following up recovered from a poor start to take his game with Saunders to a fifth end - Saunders winning 11/4, 11/7, 7/11, 10/12, 11/8 - Mark made amends by defeating both James and Phillips in five ends to complete the scoring for Billericay. Billericay Sports "B" were defeated 9 - 1 at home by visitors Billericay "A" with John Gagg and Dave Carter winning all of their games and Steve Northcott winning twice - his defeat coming in five at the hands of Pat White - Northcott losing 11/9, 11/7, 6/11, 9/11, 8/11 - Brian Cole and Andrew Murray were pointless . Billericay "B" pulled off a 7 - 3 home win over a below strength Brentwood "A" with both John Webber and Guy McKenzie unbeaten and Alan Spires as third player. For Brentwood Philip Purser, Bob Garson (P/Up and Brian Steward (P/Up) all defeated luckless Spires - Steward being unfortunate in his other two games which he lost in five ends. Billericay Sports "B" and Billericay "C" fought out a 5 - 5 draw with no one player able to complete a maximum - for the home side Brian Cole (2 wins) defeated Mark Martin (1 win) and Russell Thornton (1 win), losing to Paul Mulley (2 wins) in five ends, Dave Kirston (2 wins) defeated Mulley and Thornton and Sport's third player Andrew Murray defeating Martin. Week Commencing 29th October 2007 Buttsbury "A" gave an indication that their champions title is not going to be lost easily when they played a home match against Billericay "A" - their team of George Pavitt, Glenn Johnson and Ray Murray picked up the bulk of the points in a 9 - 1 win over John Gagg, Steve Northcott and John Parodi with only one point for Northcott's win over Pavitt to show for Billericay's efforts - Northcott winning 11/4, 3/11, 14/12, 12/10. Paul Mulley (1 win), Mark Martin (1 win) and Terry Timms (2 wins) of Billericay "C" were at home to Billericay Sports "A" and were held by the visitors to a 5 - 5 draw - the first encounter between Mulley and Bruce Kettle was to prove to be vital to the final result as Kettle had four game points to take the first end but fell at the final hurdle 16/14, taking the next 14/12 there was still a chance for the Sports player but Mulley came through in the end to win in four. Keith Ashton took two points with four end wins over Mulley and Martin while their new recruit Keith Shepherd gained an impressive maximum over his opponents, all in four ends. Kettle having failed to score and with the doubles going to the home team a draw seemed a fair result. Another drawn match pitted Mountnessing "A" against Billericay "B" on an evening when no player could remain unbeaten - the visitors got off to a flying start - racing into a 4 - 1 lead with two wins each for Neil Freeman and Steve Muth with Gordon Gatheral recovering from a end deficit to take the second singles of the evening against John Webber in five - but Mountnessing hit back after the interval with Hamish Innes beating Webber, Gatheral defeating Muth followed by two more singles wins - Innes over Freeman and Finlayson over Webber to put the home side in the lead - the visitors took the doubles to complete a 5 - 5 draw. BAE Selex "A" picked up a 7 - 3 home win over two player Billericay Sports "A" with Gary Ward unbeaten, Trevor Collin gaining two points and Kevin Smart one point - for Sports "A" Debbie defeated both Collin and Smart and lost a super encounter with Ward 6/11 in the fourth end - Andrew Murray was Sports other player and gained a victory over Smart for his point and only narrowly failed to defeat Ward in five ends 5/11, 11/8, 11/7, 7/11, 13/15. The following match for Billericay Sports "A" saw them at home to top of the table Hutton "A" - the visitors winning 8 - 2 - Keith Phillips and Ken James were unbeaten with Peter Saunders losing to Dave Kirston in three ends for Sports solitary singles point - the other coming via the doubles - Brian Cole and Andrew Murray were the remaining two home players. Week Commencing 22nd October 2007 Early predictions are looking promising as Hutton "A" rattled up their fourth win on the trot with a 9- 1 home win over BAE Selex "A" - in excellent form for Hutton were Kevin Read and Django Fung with maximums and supported by Keith Phillips who won twice. The visitors of Trevor Collin, Nigel Lamb and Gary Ward found the home side too hot with Ward being the only victor with a four end win over Phillips - Ward losing an end 2/11 in the process - he also was partly responsible for the only five end encounter on the night - with Read winning 6/11, 11/9, 14/12, 9/11, 5/11. Hutton are top with games in hand on the chasing teams. A week earlier BAE Selex "A" were at home against a family team of Billericay "C" - Dad Paul Mulley (2 wins) and sons Mark (2 wins) and Mathew (1 win) pulled off a hard earned 6 - 4 away win with Paul losing to Gary Ward (2 wins) in three, Mark beating Ward in five 11/6, 7/11, 14/12, 10/12, 11/7 and Mathew also losing to Ward in four. Kevin Smart lost all three but BAE's third player Dave Calleja (2 wins) lost to Paul in five but gained a cracking four end win over Mark 11/9, 15/13, 3/11, 14/12. Defending champions Buttsbury "A" had to settle for a draw in their away fixture with Billericay "B" - George Reeves made a rare appearance for the home side along with John Webber and Neil Freeman with Buttsbury fielding John Holland, George Pavitt and Ev Lucas. Reeves was unbeaten with Webber winning twice and Freeman unable to score - Holland picking up two wins and a single win each for Pavitt and Lucas. The only five end encounter was a close doubles affair that went to the visitors 17/15, 13/15, 12/10, 11/13, 11/4. Another 5 - 5 draw occurred in a home match for Billericay "A" against Herongate - All three of the home players Peter Barrett, Dave Carter and John Gagg managed to defeat Peter Rushbrook who was a trifle unfortunate to leave without a win - two four end defeats and a five end loss to Gagg was the result of his evenings efforts - George Dianin was unbeaten - losing an end to Gagg 18/20 and Neal Barker collected two wins - losing to Barrett in three. Billericay Sports "A" entertained Brentwood "A" and were home losers 2 - 8 to the visitors - Nikki Kennard was in tremendous form and defeated all three of her opponents in three ends Ray Eldridge (1 win) , Keith Ashton (1 win) and Brian Warren (P/Up) being unable to contain her explosive hitting power. Eldridge lost the first two ends against Paul Cuming but collected the last three for his one point of the evening - Eldridge also lost the first two ends against Trevor Carter but recovered to take the game into a final end which went to Carter who had earlier lost to Ashton in four to give Ashton his only point. Warren had a close tussle with Carter in the first game but lost 10/12, 14/12, 13.15, 7/11. Week Commencing 15th October 2007 An unusual meeting between Mountnessing "A" and Billericay Sports "A" resulted in a 6 - 3 home win for Dave Finlayson and Hamish Innes over Keith Ashton and Bruce Kettle. With a player short on each side the match was over fairly quickly - Finlayson defeated Kettle in three but lost to Ashton in four while Innes won both of his games in three ends - not that easy against Kettle who went under 13/15, 6/11, 11/13. A good competitive match between Billericay "C" and Brentwood "A" was made all the easier when visitor Nikki Kennard was forced to retire having played one game. Excellent performances from the Billericay trio of Paul Mulley, Mark Martin and Terry Timms who gained a 7 - 3 home win against Philip Purser, Trevor Carter and Nikki Kennard. Two wins for Carter who was unlucky to lose to Mulley in the fifth end in the first game of the evening 11/9, 8/11, 8/11, 11/5, 9/11 - Carter's win over the difficult Timms coming in five as was Martin's win over Kennard 9/11, 7/11, 11/5, 12/10, 11/8 - Purser unlucky on the night and failing to score. Brentwood deserved their third point with a doubles victory helped by the table edge to end with 4/11, 11/9, 13/11, 13/11. Week Commencing 8th October 2007 Billericay "A" suffered a 10 - 0 defeat at home to a Hutton "A" team who have taken an early lead in the race for the League title. John Gagg, John Parodi and Dave Carter suffered their loss at the hands of Django Fung, Peter Saunders and Keith Phillips with Fung rarely extended - losing only one end all evening - to Gagg who took both Saunders and Phillips to five ends. Parodi did like wise to the same two opponents - the visitors were on top from the first game although Parodi held an end advantage at 2 - 1 against Saunders before losing 11/13 in the final end and Gagg held a similar 2 - 1 advantage against Phillips but also failed to hold on. Week Commencing 1st October 2007 Hutton "A" gave an indication that they will be serious contenders for the title this season with an 8 -2 home win over Billericay "B" - Peter Saunders was in excellent form for the home side - winning his three games despite having to come from a 2 - 1 end deficit against Guy McKenzie, winning 11/7, 9/11, 7/11, 11/3, 12/10 - Ken James picked up two wins - losing in five to McKenzie while Keith Phillips lost out in his first game of the evening against Neil Freeman in four ends but won his other two - Keith Cullen (P/up) was unable to score. A doubles win in five for Graham Arthurton and Neil Barker over Ray Eldridge and Bruce Kettle was enough to give Herongate a 6 - 4 home win over Billericay Sports "A" - Eldridge was in excellent form for the visitors and was unbeaten - being taken to five ends by both Barker and Arthurton but defeating his other opponent Wayne Holder - with the score at 4 - 4 Sport's third player Paul Brown needed to defeat Holder but was edged out - Brown unlucky on the night losing to both of his other opponents in five ends. Kettle taking one win with victory over Holder in five. Former Brentwood "A" favourite Gary Ward has returned to the League with BAE Selex "A" and gave an excellent performance by winning his three games - his first victory over John Parodi of Billericay "A" was by the narrowest of margins with just the minimum of points separating the players in each of the five ends - Ward winning 9/11, 11/13, 12/10, 11/9, 15/13 - Keith Spicer (unbeaten) also had to come from the first two ends behind against Parodi before getting home 11/8 in the fifth end. Trevor Collin had a night to forget being unable to gain any wins over Billericay's three players losing to Peter Barrett, Dave Carter and Parodi in their 7 - 3 home win. Brentwood "A" gained a 6 - 4 home victory over Mountnessing "A" with Paul Cuming unbeaten, Nikki Kennard winning twice and unusually Trevor Carter losing all three against Hamish Innes (2 wins), Dave Finlayson and Mark Allaway (1 win each). Trevor Carter's report on the match is as follows - "A hugely entertaining match played in a competitive yet friendly and sporting way notwithstanding the fact that the writer was the only player to fail to score. The difference between the two sides was undoubtedly Paul Cuming - marginally!! and it was pleasing to have Mountnessing in the top echelon. It is to be hoped that the return match in the New Year is as equally enjoyable" Carter lost in the fifth end of two of his games - 6/11 to Allaway and 9/11 to Finlayson and took Innes to four ends. Billericay Sports "A" entertained Buttsbury "A" and quickly went 4 - 2 ahead with wins for Ray Eldridge over Glen Johnson and Ray Murray (both in five) and victories over George Pavitt for both Bruce Kettle (P/up) and John Cleasby also both in five. Buttsbury then stormed back to take the final four encounters to win the match 6 - 4 with Johnson and Murray defeating the home team's Kettle and Cleasby. The sixth game Eldridge against Pavitt was to decide the outcome of the match - in his previous two games Eldridge had fought back from concedingthe first two ends and against Pavitt he also fell in the first two ends - clawing his way back to level and go into a deciding fifth end which went to the visitor 12/10. Billericay "B" were 8 - 2 winners at home to Billericay Sports "B" with John Webber recording a fine maximum over Brian Cole, Pat White and Bruce Kettle. Guy McKenzie and Steve Muth supported with two wins each - McKenzie losing to White in three and Kettle gaining an excellent four end win over Muth. Week Commencing 24th September 2007 Billericay "C" scored a superb 6 - 4 win over high flying Mountnessing "A" in a match that produced some extremely entertaining table tennis. The Mulley family of Paul and his sons Mark and Matt took on Dave Finlayson, Hamish Innes and Gordon Gatheral and were good value for their victory. The new signing Innes had been unbeaten in his two matches this season and looked on course for another maximum having beaten both Paul and Mark but up against a persistent Matt he found the junior of his three opponents in fine form with the younger player's blocking and determination taking him through to an excellent five end victory 11/7, 5/11, 13/11, 6/11, 11/6 - Matt had earlier beaten Gatheral in five but lost to Finlayson in three. Gatheral was unlucky on the night with two five end and one four end losing encounters while Innes picked up two wins and Finlayson likewise - three players Matt and Mark Mulley and Innes lost their 100% records. Buttsbury "A" of John Holland, Steve Willis and George Pavitt faced a two man Brentwood "A" team of Trevor Carter and Philip Purser and recorded a 9 - 1 victory to move them closer to the top of the table - Carter was the visitors point scorer with a win over Pavitt but might consider himself unlucky to lose to Willis having taken the first two ends. Week Commencing 17th September 2007 Billericay Sports "A" entertained their Sports "B" team and with an unfamiliar line up of John Cleasby, Bruce Kettle (P/Up) and Alf Fox (P/Up) and were held to a draw by Debbie Auvache, Pat White and Brian Cole - Auvache was invincible on the night and contributed four points to her team's total - three wins and the doubles share but both Cleasby and Fox defeated White and Cole and with Kettle also beating Cole a draw was the final outcome. Cleasby's loss to Auvache went to five ends 10/12, 12/10, 12/10, 11/8, 14/16. A very competitive match that finished at 11.45 pm saw Billericay "C" go down 4 - 6 to their Billericay "A" side - Terry Timms was undefeated for the losers and also had a share of the doubles with Mark Martin - Paul Mulley was the "C" team's third player against the might of John Gagg, John Parodi and Dave Carter - only two games finishing in three. Both Mark Martin and Paul Mulley deserved to pick up some points but they were full of praise for Billericay "A"'s experienced but aged squad - Mulley played 14 games, Martin 13 and Timms 15 the same number for both Parodi and Carter with Gagg having the easier evening playing only 12 ends. A Steve Muth maximum, assisted by John Webber with two wins and Guy McKenzie with one win saw their team Billericay "B" gain a 7 - 3 home win over BAE Selex "A" with Keith Spicer scoring twice, Dave Calleja defeating McKenzie in five and Kevin Smart empty handed. Hamish Innes recorded his second successive maximum in Mountnessing's home match with Buttsbury "A" which saw the visitors claim a 6 - 4 away win - unfortunately Dave Finlayson was pointless on the evening with Gordon Gatheral defeating Ev Lucas for the home side's fourth point. Lucas picked up one point with George Pavitt and Steve Willis scoring two apiece. Week Commencing 3rd September 2007 Buttsbury "A" began the defence of their League title with a home match against Billericay "C" - the home side fielded Glen Johnson, George Pavitt and Ev Lucas and were up against Mark Martin, Mark Mulley and Terry Timms - the visitors took six singles in a 6 - 4 away win and had Mark Mulley to thank for three of those singles wins - Mulley had reasonably comfortable wins over Pavitt and Lucas and found Johnson a more difficult proposition - just getting the better of Johnson 11/7, 10/12, 12/14, 11/2, 11/7 - Timms (2 wins) also had a long encounter with Johnson before losing the fifth end 8/11. Billericay's third player Martin picked up a vital point by defeating the unfortunate Lucas who failed to score. Another excellent performance came from Mountnessing's new signing Hamish Innes who picked up an excellent maximum in his team's away match at Herongate - his three wins included an impressive four end win over George Dianin - Dave Finlayson and Gordon Gatheral supported Innes with a win each over Wayne Holder but both were to lose to Richard Jackman - Finlayson & Innes took the doubles against Dianin & Jackman to record the victory at 6 - 4. Steve Northcott was another unbeaten performer - his team Billericay "A" gained a 6 - 4 home win over Billericay "B", supporting Northcott was John Parodi with two wins and Dave Carter with 1 win - for the visitors John Webber won twice, Guy McKenzie once with Neil Freeman unable to score losing to Northcott in five 9- 11 in the final end and also in five to Carter. Both Billericay Sports teams found their opposition in good form at the start of this new season - the Sports "A" team were away to a strong Hutton "A" team who fielded Kevin Read, Keith Phillips and Django Fung - for Sports Keith Ashton, John Cleasby and Debbie Auvache were on the receiving end of a 10 - 0 scoreline. The "B" team of Brian Cole, Dave Kirston and Andrew Murray fared little better against a Brentwood "A" team of the Brentwood visitors gaining a 7 - 3 away win.Trevor Carter, Paul Cuming and Phillip Purser - the three home players all managed to defeat luckless Purser but found both Carter and Cuming in impressive form - |
