Brentwood & District Table Tennis League

Premier Division Knock Out Cup 2007-2008

Keith Phillips report is as follows: -                                 With the score at 3-1 in Herongate's favour after a doubles win 11-9 in the 5th end for Barker/Arthurton over Phillips/Fung and singles wins for Arthurton over Phillips 15-13 in the 5th end and Barker over Fung in 4 ends, Hutton's reply a 3 end win for Read over Jackman,           Hutton's ambitions of a treble were slipping from their grasp.                            The deficit however was soon remedied with undoubtedly what was the most exciting and entertaining game of an evening of high quality table tennis with a 3 end doubles win for Read/Fung over Jackman/Arthurton,  only 3 ends, easy you might say, but 3 ends of classic doubles play by four on form players.              Phillips then restored parity in the match with a 4 end win over Jackman.                    It then fell to Hutton's strongest player Read to get Hutton back on track for the treble and he duly obliged with a 3 end win over Barker.                       At 4-3 in Hutton's favour and the match still nicely poised Fung provided the victory to take Hutton over the finishing line with a 4 end win over Arthurton although that final point was the toughest to get as Arthurton saved match points against him in both the 3rd and 4th ends before finally succumbing.

A great match played in excellent spirit by all.

Semi-finals week commencing 10th March 2008

Hutton "A" 5  -  1  Billericay "A"

Herongate "A" 5  -  0  W/Over  Buttsbury "A"

The Hutton "A" trio of the ever present Keith Phillips, Django Fung and Peter Saunders took a further step to a treble by defeating the Billericay "A" visitors of John Gagg, John Parodi and Dave Carter.  The visitors were in trouble from the first doubles  Fung/Saunders easily beating Parodi/Carter in three- Phillips overcame Gagg in four but Parodi pulled one back for the visitors by defeating Saunders in four but that was where the resistance failed as Hutton went on to take the remaining three ties in comfortable fashion - their opponents in the final will be Herongate who were given a free ride to the final when Buttsbury conceded the match due to being unable to field a qualified team.

Second Round  week commencing 10th December 2007

BAE Selex "A"   0  -  5   Herongate

Billericay "B" 1  -  5   Hutton "A"

Brentwood "A"   0  -  5 W/O Billericay "A"

Buttsbury "A"  5  -  1   Billericay Sports "B"

At first glance the 5 - 0 success by Herongate over BAE Selex "A" might well have looked easy but in effect the visitors had to rely on three five end encounters all at deuce and also the remaining two encounters going to four ends.      The first doubles saw Keith Spicer and Trevor Collin hold an end advantage at 2- 1 over Neal Barker and Graham Arthurton but the home pair were unable to hang on and lost the final two ends 7/11 and 10/12.  More misfortune was to fall on Gary Ward as he took the first two ends against Richard Jackman but he likewise lost in five 13/11, 11/6, 7/11, 8/11, 10/12.   Collin lost to Barker in four having won the first end  and just failed to take the game into a fifth end losing 21/23 in the third.  Spicer then followed up against Arthurton by  taking the first two ends but losing the next three - again a fifth end at 10/12 which saw Herongate take a 4 - 0 lead with the win being completed in the next middle doubles in four ends.         Buttsbury "A" seek to retain at least one title this season and gained an easy 5 - 1 win over Billericay Sports "B".    Reagan Nettleingham, George Pavitt and Ev Lucas were rarely extended against Brian Cole, Dave Kirston and Andrew Murray with only a win for Murray over Pavitt in five to show for their efforts.                              On course for a League and Cup double are Hutton "A" who played their away second round match at Billericay "B" - the visitors Keith Phillips, Peter Saunders and Ken James  lost the first doubles in five ends but then proceeded  to take the next five encounters to ease to victory 5 - 1.  The match was a little closer than the score suggest as Guy McKenzie lost to James in five after holding a 2 - 1 lead and John Webber held a 2 - 0 lead but lost to Saunders in five - Neil Freeman was Billericay's third player but went down in four to Saunders        Brentwood "A" conceded their match with Billericay "A".

No Preliminary Round - First Round in week commencing 8th October 2007

Draw as below

Hutton "A" 5  -  0 W/Over   Billericay "C"

Mountnessing "A"  3 -  5   Buttsbury "A"

An  excellent match was played to a finish with Mountnessing "A" holding Buttsbury "A" 3 - 3 before finally going down 3 - 5.  The home side took the first doubles with Dave Finlayson and Mark Allaway defeating Pavitt and Lucas in five but the visitors drew level with probably the game of the evening Hamish Innes versus John Holland - Holland just getting the better of Innes in five ends 7/11, 11/9, 11/9, 8/11, 11/6 - Alloway then defeated Pavitt also in five to put the home side ahead again only to be pulled back level with Ev Lucas defeating Finlayson in four.  Innes and Holland were again involved this time in the middle doubles along with their parttners Allaway and Lucas which went to the visitors, again in five 11/7, 11/5, 8/11, 7/11, 11/9  - Buttsbury now had the win in sight but Innes came to the fore again with a four end win over Pavitt to make the scores 3 - 3.        Holland over Finlayson and Lucas over Allaway however gained the two wins necessary to see the visitors home 5 - 3.
