Brentwood & District Table Tennis League
First Division Knock Out Cup 2007-2008
The Final was played on Thursday 24th April 2008.
Billericay Sports "C" favoured a more attacking line up and left ace defender and Captain Brian Wellman on the substitutes bench with Mike Johnston, Mick Joslin and Brian Warren facing Colin Clements, Alby Warner and Trevor Ward. The match began in good style for Sports "C" with Joslin/Warren taking the first doubles over Warner/Ward - the home pairing having to come from behind to force the game into a fifth end which they took 11/9, 7/11, 10/12, 11/6, 11/9. Johnston then put his side two games up with a convincing three end win over Clements. Warren and Warner then had a tense five end struggle which went to the visitor 7/11, 11/7, 12/14, 11/8, 5/11. Ward then pulled BAE level with a three end win over Joslin and Ward then partnered Clements in the middle doubles against Johnston and Warren with the result going to the visitors to put them ahead for the first time. Johnston then defeated Warner in another five end encounter - taking the first two ends he allowed Warner back into the tie but narrowly held on for a win in the fifth end to take the match score to 3 - 3. The stage was then set for a possible surprise result but BAE had other ideas and despite going 6 - 1 down in the first leg Clements battled back to a three end win over Joslin followed by a winning tie for Ward over Warren which saw BAE Selex "B" complete a winning double - Divisional Champions and Knock Out Cup Winners.
Semi-final week commencing 10th March 2008
BAE "B" 5 - 0 Billericay Sports "D"
BAE "B" gained sweet revenge for losing to Billericay Sports "D" in the Handicap Cup Semi Final and took no time at all in disposing of their opponents in this Semi Final by 9.00 pm. The first doubles was a win in four for Alby Warner and Trevor Ward over Nigel Swanton and Malcolm Henstock. Colin Clements and Trevor Ward then won their singles encounters against Alf Fox and Nigel Swanton and it was left to Alby Warner to claim the third singles with a five end win over Malcolm Henstock. The match was well and truly over in the middle doubles with a win for Clements/Ward over Fox/Henstock for a 5 - 0 clear win.
Billericay Sports "C" 5 - 3 St. Joseph's
Two doubles came to the aid of Billericay Sports "C" in their home match with St. Joseph's and coupled with a win for each of the home players meant that they recovered from a 2 - 1 deficit to record a 5 - 3 victory over their visitors. None of the ties went to a fifth end with only two being taken to four ends - Sue Hickman was St. Joseph's best player with two comfortable wins in three ends over Mike Johnstone and Brian Wellman - Gary Carr picked up a win over Brian Warren with Lindsey Phelps unable to score - losing to both Wellman and Warren. Both sides picked up three singles but it was in the two doubles that the home sides superiority came to the good - the first in four ends and the second much closer 12/10, 11/8, 15/13. The remaining semi final is scheduled for Thursday 20th March.
Second Round week commencing 10th December 2007
Billericay Sports "C" 5 - 1 Mountnessing "B"
Billericay Sports "D" 5 - 3 Brentwood "B"
Buttsbury "C" 0 v 5 St. Joseph's
Mountnessing "C" 0 - 5 BAE Selex "B"
Both Billericay Sports teams entered into the Semi-Finals with home victories - the Sports "C" team were victors over a strong Mountnessing "B" team of Mick Morris, Peter Hardiman and Chris Crooks with the 5 - 1 scoreline somewhat flattering the home team of Mike Johnston, Brian Wellman and Mike Joslin. The first two doubles were crucial to the final result as they both went to Sports "C" in five ends - in between Johnston over Morris in five and Wellman over Crooks in three gave the home side a 4 - 1 lead going into the final three singles, which were not needed as Johnston collected his second win of the match by defeating Hardiman - who had earlier collected the visitors one win by defeating Joslin in five ends. The other Sports team "D" however did not find the doubles coming to their assistance as their visitors Brentwood "B" won both of the early doubles - the middle doubles win coming after they had fought back from a 2 - 0 deficit - but it was in the singles that the Sports team were in command with Linda Murray and Nigel Swanton winning both of their singles and Malcolm Henstock collecting the vital match winning contest against Colin Griffiths - Brian Steward claimed Brentwood's only singles victory by defeating Henstock in five ends and having to win the last two ends to claim the victory but Brentwood failed on the night 3 - 5 - only three of the games went to five ends but Griffiths did his utmost against Swanton and forced the contest into a fifth end before losing out 8/11, 11/4, 0/11, 14/12, 10/12 most definitely a vital game that turned the match in Sport's favour. A comprehensive defeat for the home side of Mountnessing "C" by BAE Selex "B" with the score 5 - 0 in favour of the visitors. Brian Nicholson gave a good account of himself - against Alby Warner the encounter went to a fifth end with Nicholson having lost a 2 - 1 lead - he was also a trifle unfortunate against Gary Hartgrove 11/8, 10/12, 10/12, 8/11 - both Paul Singleton and Joan Donovan took ends from opponents with BAE's third player Chris Aukett joining in with a singles victory over Singleton.
No Preliminary Round - First Round in week commencing 8th October 2007
Draw as below
BAE Selex "B" 5 - 2 Writtle "A"
Billericay "D" 0 - 5 W/Over St. Josephs
Buttsbury "B" 2 - 5 Mountnessing "B"
A home win for BAE Selex "B" thanks to singles wins for Colin Clements over Chris Hibbitt, Trevor Ward over Ian Hockley and Hibbitt and with BAE taking the first two doubles the match was concluded early at 5 - 2 in favour of BAE Selex "B". Their third player Chris Aukett took a two end lead over Dave Moles but found the final three ends going to his opponent who also collected a four end win over Clements for Writtle's two points. Buttsbury "B" entertained Mountnessing "B" and were beaten 5 - 2 by the visitors - James Kelly defeated both Jon Dyson and Peter Hardiman for Buttsbury's two wins but neither Tony Nettleingham or Davey Crook (P/Up) was able to add to the scoreline - John Hickey was Mountnessing's third player but as in so many matches the doubles victories were a key factor in the final result with the visitors winning both doubles played.
